Canadian troops transfer duty

Canadians may have formally handed over their battlefield to American troops in Afghanistan but they are leaving a part of Canada behind.

The Tim Hortons at the Kandahar base will stay open until at least October.

It’s so popular that both American and British soldiers have joked it makes them want to move to Canada.

The battle group handover ceremony took place at the mountainside base where Canadians fought their fiercest battles of the war.

U.S. Lieutenant-Colonel Steve Miller says the area he inherits is quieter than he expected, and he says that is thanks to the work of the Van Doos.

The Van Doos battle group commander says the base is symbolic of much of the sacrifice Canadians have made over the last five-and-a-half years.
