The Canadian men’s hockey team is heading to the semi-finals at the Milan Cortina Olympics after Mitch Marner secured the win over the Czechs with a goal in overtime.

Macklin Celebrini scored Canada’s first goal of the match against Czechia, but it was followed up later in the first quarter with a tying shot from Czech forward Lukas Sedlak.

Putting Czechia up 2-1 in the first period was David Pastrňák, taking advantage of a power play.

In the second period of the game, Canadian captain Sidney Crosby went out with an injury. He did not return for the remainder of the match.

The injury happened following a hit from Czechia’s Radko Gudas. Crosby was then seen struggling to put weight on his right side and was visibly taking caution when walking down the tunnel.

After Crosby’s exit, Nathan MacKinnon put the game at 2-2 with a power play goal off a pass from Macklin Celebrini.

Czechia took the lead toward the end of the third period with a goal from Ondřej Palát.

Canada’s Nick Suzuki responded with a goal, tying the game at 3-3.

Soon after hitting the ice in overtime, Marner put a shot top right to get the win for Canada, sending the men’s team to the semi-finals.

Two more medals Wednesday

Canada earned its 14th medal of the Games Wednesday.

Canadian short-track speedskater Steven Dubois won gold in the men’s 500 metres.

The women’s 3,000-metre short-track speedskating relay team skated to bronze on Day 12 of the Games. Danae Blais, Florence Brunelle, Kim Boutin and Courtney Sarault led the relay for much of the race before falling back to third. Canada finished in four minutes 4.314 seconds, three-tenths of a second behind the gold medalist from South Korea. Host Italy was second.

Falling short on the slopes

Snowboarder Mark McMorris finished in eighth place after a hard fall attempting a frontside 1800 on his third run of the slopestyle final.

Marion Thénault finished with a high score of 108.61 in the aerials qualifiers this morning, but the 23-year-old from Quebec missed the cut for the aerials finals.

Canadian snowboarder Laurie Blouin claimed fifth place, while Juliette Pelchat took ninth in the slopestyle final.
