Olympic update: Canada earns second gold medal in big air skiing competition

Canada is off to a strong start in the second week of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, claiming a gold and silver medal on Monday.

Earning Canada its second gold medal of the games is Megan Oldham in the freestyle big air skiing competition.

The 24-year-old from Parry Sound, Ont. has now earned Canada two of its 11 medals. The first being a bronze from Feb. 9 in the women’s freeski slopestyle competition.

Starting the day strong on Monday morning was Courtney Sarault, stepping on the platform for her third time ever to claim silver in the women’s 1,000 metre speed skating event.

The 25-year-old from Moncton, N.B. led for the first six of nine laps before falling to third with two laps to go. She then fought her way back into second on the final lap.

Sarault also has a silver in the mixed team relay and an individual bronze in the 500 metre race from earlier in the Games.

Canadian gold

Looking to the weekend, Canada earned its first gold medal of the Winter Olympics Sunday.

Flag bearer Mikael Kingsbury won gold in the first ever dual moguls event. It is his second career Olympic gold and fifth Olympic medal overall.

Oldham’s Monday afternoon gold brings Canada up from 15th to 13th place in the medal standings.

Norway remains at the top of the table with 12 gold and 26 medals.

Italy is next with eight gold, followed by the U.S., Sweden and the Netherlands with five gold.
