Grocery rebates won’t help food inflation problem, say experts

11-million Canadians will be issued a cheque today from the federal government. The Liberals are calling it a “grocery rebate” – meant to help offset the crazy prices we are seeing at grocery store checkouts. But really, the money can be used however you wish.

There’s no doubt this one time payment will be able to temporarily help those struggling to make ends meet in one way or another – but experts say it doesn’t solve the food inflation problem in this country, and might actually make it worse.

Food Policy Professor Sylvain Charlebois from Dalhousie University spoke with Trending Now about the rebate and food inflation.
