Canada out of world junior hockey championship

Canada is out of the world junior hockey championship, and it was a sour reminder of last year.

The host Canadians lost in the final minute of the quarter-final game to Czechia, the same team who knocked them out of the quarter-finals in the 2024 championships.

The Canucks bounced back from two goals down to tie it up in the third period, but it wasn’t enough as 18-year-old Adam Jecho found the net on a power play with 39 seconds remaining.

Penalties plagued the Canadians in the tournament and — just like 12 months ago — they bowed out in fifth place.

It’s the first time the team has failed to medal at back-to-back world juniors since Canada introduced its program of excellence in the 1980s.

The annual event is organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation for national under-20 ice hockey teams from around the world.

Ottawa is hosting the tournament this year.

In the semi-finals on Saturday Sweden will face Finland and Czechia will take on the U.S., the defending champs.

The finals are set for Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
