Today marks the celebration of International Women’s Day, a day meant to commemorate and honour women’s accomplishments across the globe.

International Women’s Day first took place in March 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland with over a million people attending public events to show their support.

In the years that followed, other countries began to observe and celebrate the day as well and the United Nations recognized 1975 as International Women’s Year, marking the eighth of March officially as International Women’s Day.

In honour of the day, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, Mary Ng announced the recipients of funding today under the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy.

The strategy contains a nearly $7 billion initiative designed to help remove systemic barriers women face. The money is meant to help women access the financing, resources and networks they need to start up, scale up and reach international markets.
