Brampton truck driver charged after fallen sign closes Highway 401 in Whitby

Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 24-year-old man in connection with the collapse of an overhead sign that blocked the westbound lanes of Highway 401 in Whitby during the morning rush hour Friday.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the transport truck hit the sign shortly after 8 a.m., causing it to buckle and fall down.
24 year old driver from Brampton is now charged with:
*Overheight vehicle
*Fail to remain
*Careless driving.
As a result of crashing into the overhead sign with his his vehicle’s dump box in the raised position.

Schmidt says a witness saw the driver stop after the collision and get out of the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The Brampton driver is facing three charges, including careless driving and failing to remain at the scene.
Nearly eight hours after the crash, police say all lanes have now reopened at Highway 401 and Brock St. in Whitby.
