Atlantic Liberal Caucus calls January meeting to discuss Trudeau’s future
The Atlantic Liberal Caucus is calling for a national meeting in early January so the party’s MPs can discuss their next steps, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s future.
It’s part of a growing motion across Canadian politics that could lead Trudeau to step down — or be removed from office.
A Dec. 23 electronic letter sent to Trudeau and posted on Facebook said that the Atlantic Liberal Caucus met that morning after what had been a “difficult week for the Government and the Liberal Party.”
The letter — signed by Caucus president Kody Blois, MP Kings-Hants — also addressed whether the Liberal Party of Canada’s constitution should be “invoked to allow Caucus to be involved in appointing an interim leader.”
Federal Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre plan to spearhead a non-confidence vote in the New Year aimed at bringing down the Liberal government.
The motion could be voted on by Jan. 30. If it passes, it could trigger an immediate call for an election.
