Archaeologic find

Ceramics, railway tiles and glass are just a few of the items that have surfaced during an archaeological dig in Fort Erie. Crews have been digging up and sifting through small plots of soil near Miller’s Creek Marina along the Niagara Parkway. They have discovered animal bones as well as old nails used to build houses. The artifacts date back to around the 1840’s. Officials believe there was a European settlement near the marina at one point in time.

Shawn Bayes of Godlers Associates says “all the artifacts are kind of jumbled up in there because over the years with the use this land has seen things kind of get mixed around in the soil so it is our job to interpret those layers.”

The Niagara Parks Commission has been working on the site since last September. They eventually plan to develop it.
