The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) alerted police after the potential explosives were found in a vehicle in the secondary inspection area of the bridge complex.
Traffic is being re-routed to the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel and the Blue Water Bridge at Sarnia, Ont.
The CBSA says they will depend on emergency and highway officials to indicate when it is safe to resume travel across the bridge.
Police are asking the public to avoid the area right now.
