Eaton Centre shooter shocked

The lawyer for a man convicted of fatally shooting two people in Toronto’s Eaton Centre in 2012 says his client is in shock over his sentence.

Christopher Husbands will be ineligible for parole for a total of 30 years — an unprecedented sentence for second degree murder in Canada.  The mandatory minimum is 10 years for each charge, and the judge decided the periods of parole ineligibility should be served consecutively.

Husbands, age 26, was convicted by a jury in December of fatally shooting two men and wounding five others — including a 13-year-old boy who was critically injured.   He was also convicted of five counts of aggravated assault, one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and one count of recklessly discharging a firearm.

Husband’s lawyer says he plans to appeal both the conviction and the sentence.
