Ontario announces 78 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday

The province revealed Monday there are 78 new cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, the largest increase in a day so far.

Among the newly diagnosed patients are three Hamilton residents, including a woman in her 20s, and a man and woman, both in their seventies. All three people are currently in self-isolation.

The province says the seniors contracted the virus as a result of close contact while it is still unknown how the young woman became infected.

A man in his 50s from Halton Region who recently travelled to Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and Barbados has also been confirmed to have the virus as well as another man in his forties from the region who travelled to Jamaica.

The latest numbers also include at least six people who are hospitalized, including a woman in her 30s, a man in his 40s, two people in their 50s and two people in their 70s.

The province did not list any new cases from Niagara Region but there are dozens of cases listed as pending.

Monday’s numbers bring the provincial total to 503 confirmed cases including six deaths and eight cases that have fully resolved.
