Halton police say a major residential natural gas leak in Milton took place Monday evening in the area of Regional Road 25 and Louis St. Laurent.

Police, fire and hydro responded to a request for assistance from Enbridge Gas at around 7:45 p.m. at a home on Bartleman Terrace.

Gas workers originally responded to gas odour but quickly determined there was a major gas leak within the home.

Police say nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution and transit buses were used to temporarily shelter affected residents.

Officers say the incident was cleared around 9:30 p.m. The cause was determined to be a valve leak from a barbeque outside the home that was seeping inside and the issue was resolved.
