Hamilton police rescued six puppies after responding to an animal welfare incident on the east Hamilton Mountain.

On Tuesday at around 1:30 p.m., officers responded to a home after a worker conducting tree removal nearby saw several puppies in distress inside an outdoor cage.

Responding officers located eight puppies that appeared severely undernourished, with several unresponsive and one appearing dead.

Officers provided water to the surviving puppies and contacted Animal Control and Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS).

Investigators say the puppies were transported by police to an emergency veterinary clinic.
