A Hamilton man is facing fraud-related charges after an investigation into the misappropriation of about $490,000 from a non-profit organization.

On March 24, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) launched a fraud investigation after a Centre Wellington non-profit organization reported a complaint.

Detectives say this revealed that around $490,000 had been misappropriated between 2020 and 2025.

Officers say Rein Pertens, 45, has been charged with fraud over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, laundering proceeds of crime and criminal breach of trust.

Pertens was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on Dec.18.

The OPP reminds the public that fraud can affect anyone and is advising them to monitor banking and investment accounts and to immediately report any suspicious financial activity.
