Niagara Region Public Health investigate after reports of stomach bug ‘cluster’ at Brock University

Niagara Region Public Health is investigating a recent cluster of gastrointestinal illnesses among students and staff at Brock University.

Public Health was first notified last Thursday, which prompted an investigation — collecting information about symptoms, timing and pattern of illness, and laboratory testing results.

The health unit told CHCH News that a viral illness is considered the most likely cause.

Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Angela Ma says the best way to prevent illness is by washing hands frequently and thoroughly.

The university said in a statement to CHCH News that it is working with Niagara Region Public Health and has increased the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting of high-touch points on campus.

Anyone with symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, fever or chills is advised to stay home and contact Niagara Public Health.

They are also asked to avoid contact with others until they have been symptom-free for at least 48 hours.
