Anonymous $500K donation boosts Fonthill, Ont. library renovation

The Lincoln Pelham Public Library system has received an anonymous donation of $500,000 towards the renovation of one of its branches.

The library announced the generous gift on Wednesday, saying the funds are for its Fonthill branch.

The money puts the library within $1,000,000 of covering the $4-million project.

“We’ve been blown away by support, which is a testament to what this library means to the community,” says Julie Andrews, chief executive officer.

“With this most recent gift, it’s possible we may be able to continue into the second phase of construction, eliminating the need for a second closure and truly transforming the entire branch.”

Phase one of construction begins this month with completion expected in the spring. Phase two will feature a reconfigured main level with a passenger elevator and more versatile spaces for programming, study and collaboration.

The costs of the first phase are fully funded by the Town of Pelham, with the second phase being paid for by donations.

“While this most recent donor has chosen to remain anonymous, the individual hopes their gift inspires others to give in a way that is meaningful to them,” says Cassandra Best, who coordinates fund development.

When the branch reopens it will be known as the Coyne Family Branch in recognition of an early leadership gift from Fonthill residents Paul and Bernadette Coyne.
