Oakville mourns the loss of long-time Ward 5 Coun. Marc Grant

The Town of Oakville is mourning the death of long-time Ward 5 Coun. Marc Grant, who died Monday following a sudden illness.

Grant was first elected in 2003 and was serving his seventh term on council, representing Ward 5 for over two decades.

“As my father, he was a constant and calm presence. He has been next to me for every major life achievement, cheering loudly in his own way and making sure I knew deeply that no matter where my path led he would be there behind me, watching my back and giving me a gentle nudge when I needed it,” his daughter Mackenzie posted on Facebook.

Mayor Rob Burton said Grant was a champion of public transit, parks and public spaces as well as an advocate for poverty and food security.

“We shared countless stories and collaborated on more projects and initiatives than I could ever name. No matter how serious, difficult or stressful the situation, we always left laughing,” Jeff Knoll, who also served ward 5, posted on Facebook.

A public memorial will be held at Oakville Town Hall on Aug. 8 and flags at town facilities will be lowered to half-mast in his honour.
