Arson department investigates ‘suspicious’ structure fire in Hamilton

Police are appealing for witnesses after an early Sunday morning structure fire next to a vacant Hamilton home was deemed “suspicious.”

Fire crews responded to a report of a fire near 157 Gibson Ave. just before 6 a.m., and found smoke and heavy flames at a detached structure at the back of the building.

Crews remained on scene until 11 a.m. to ensure all hotspots were put out. There were no injuries to firefighters or the public.

As the fire was deemed suspicious, the Hamilton Fire Department reached out to Hamilton police. A police arson investigator has taken over the case.

Damage is estimated to be around $40,000, with no harm to adjoining properties.

Police say that there was another fire at the same structure on July 14 of this year.
