Tourists and locals embrace the mist in heat wave at Niagara Falls

A dangerous heat wave reached its peak across the GTHA on Tuesday but it did not spoil the day for those in Niagara Falls.

“I love it! It’s nice and warm, got a little bit of humidity, little sweaty compared to home but the temperatures are great,” a city resident said.

“It’s not too bad actually but I don’t mind having a bit of spray. Keeps it to a nice temperature,” another local said.

Many carried umbrellas, wore large hats and hid out beneath trees to try to beat the heat.

The extreme temperatures also failed to discourage tourists eager to experience one of the seven Wonders of the World.

“Initial impression, I thought it was awesome. Never saw anything like it before. For me it’s a first time experience and I don’t think anything else can really top it,” a tourist said.

“I actually thought it was smaller. When I got here, they looked less grand than they do in photos but on the boat trip yesterday I took that opinion back because it’s impressive up close,” another visitor said.

While temperatures near the falls reached around roughly 30 C, the resulting mist and breeze provided some mild relief.

The most noticeable drop in temperature is found in the tunnel beneath the power centre, where the air cools to a steady 12 C.
