The Welland Fire and Emergency Services is investigating the cause of an apartment fire in the city Monday.
Firefighters were called to 100 Lancaster Dr. around 8:30 p.m. after the blaze began in an eighth-floor unit.
Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the apartment balcony.
Firefighters quickly advanced into the building and put the fire out, preventing it from reaching adjacent units and limiting the damage.
The flames and smoke were brought under control with assistance from the Town of Pelham Fire Department and its aerial truck.
There were no reported injuries to residents or firefighters.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation. Preliminary estimates place the fire damage between $150,000 and $200,000.
Welland Fire and Emergency Services want to remind residents that the use of portable propane-fueled appliances in high-rise residential buildings can present a significant fire and life-safety risk.
“Residents are encouraged to follow all applicable fire safety regulations and building policies regarding the use and storage of propane-fueled equipment,” reads a statement from the department.
