Dog dead, one person hospitalized in Hamilton townhouse fire

A fire inside a townhouse unit in Hamilton has left a dog dead and one person in hospital for further assessment.

Hamilton fire responded to reports of a structure blaze at 48 Caroga Court, near Morgan Road and Garth Street around 2 a.m. on Thursday.

Firefighters say there was an active fire inside a townhouse unit, which they had extinguished.

Crews searched the home and confirmed there were no additional occupants inside.

Hamilton fire tells CHCH News that one occupant, who was outside the home when firefighters arrived, was assessed by paramedics and transported to hospital for further assessment.

Firefighters say they removed a dog  from the residence during their search but it later died.

Crews say the damages caused by the blaze is estimated to be around $250,000. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
