Hamilton Conservation Foundation has announced a $6,075,000 donation from the Heritage Green Community Trust (HGCT) to support the Saltfleet Conservation Area Wetland Restoration Project.
The initiative comprises of four wetlands across over 411 acres of conservation lands, making it one of the largest environmental restoration efforts in the Hamilton area.
The funds will support the future construction of a new visitor and environmental education centre, which will include an environmental education space, interpretive displays, accessible washrooms, office space and upgraded parking.
The funding will also finance the construction of a third 54-acre wetland site within the Saltfleet Conservation Area located above the Niagara Escarpment in Upper Stoney Creek. The wetlands are designed to minimize the risk of flooding and erosion, enhance water quality, provide outdoor recreation opportunities for the community, and create habitat for wildlife.

Construction is set to begin in 2027.
Hamilton Conservation Authority says local wildlife, such as frog and toad species, native plants and animals, and waterfowl are already returning to the area as restoration begins.
Margaret Reid, chair of HGCT, explains that the organization has proudly supported the Saltfleet project because of its long-term environmental and community impact.
“This is a legacy project that will benefit Hamilton residents and the environment for generations to come,” she said. “Restoring wetlands, protecting natural areas, and creating opportunities for people to connect with nature aligns strongly with our mission and values.”
HGCT has now committed more than $10 million toward the Saltfleet Conservation Area Wetland Restoration Project.
