Niagara Parks set to begin annual prescribed controlled burns program

The annual prescribed burns are about to start at a number of Niagara Parks sites, through to the end of May.

The planned and carefully controlled fires will take place this month and next, and are weather dependent.

Since 2008, the prescribed burns have been used to help maintain the native prairie and savannah habitat.

Burning grassy areas helps keep invasive and non-native insects and plants from taking over, while also providing fuel for native grasses.

For this year, the following sites have been identified for controlled burns:

  • Chippawa Battlefield
  • Legacy Garden at the Botanical Gardens
  • Lilac Garden Prairie
  • Paradise Grove
  • South Plains
  • Whirlpool Golf Course and Whirlpool Slope
  • Legends on the Niagara Golf Course

Last year, Niagara Parks reported conducting prescribed burns across over 38.5 hectares of land along the Niagara River corridor.
