Ontario issues zoning orders for Oakville transit community project

The Ontario government announced Thursday the issuing of four Minister’s Zoning Orders (MZO) to develop a transit-oriented community (TOC) near Oakville GO Station.

The government says it will help deliver more than 6,800 new homes, create almost 4,000 jobs during construction and support around 400 long-term jobs in Midtown Oakville.

The province is partnering with the Toronto-based company Distrikt Developments to build the Oakville TOC.

The Oakville TOC is slated to support the town’s long-term goal to meet the municipality’s commitment to deliver 33,000 homes by 2031.

“As a key partner in delivering the Oakville TOC, we have been working closely with the Town of Oakville and value their feedback as we work on making refinements to the TOC design, including opportunities for adjustments to the building heights to better reflect local input,” said Acting Minister of Infrastructure Todd McCarthy in a statement.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the town as part of our government’s plan to deliver faster, more reliable and seamless transit with more housing, jobs and community amenities near transit stations across the Greater Golden Horseshoe.”

The announcement is the next step in the process to create the community centred around the GO station since the development plans were submitted to town hall in 2024.

Ontario has invested over $44 million into Oakville for housing and community infrastructure through the Building Faster Fund and the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program.

The project plans to build the community using the plots along Cross Avenue, South Service Road and Argus Road.

The province is planning to build TOCs along the province’s subway and GO/ Light Rail Transit networks across the Greater Golden Horseshoe to deliver new homes and support new jobs near transit stations.
