Poll suggests 2 in 3 people believe Canada should remain neutral in Iran war

A new Leger poll suggests many Canadians believe the federal government should remain neutral in the Iran war.

The poll also indicates one in four Canadians think Canada should support the United States and Israel in their attacks on Iran.

Between March 13 and March 16, 1,608 Canadians were surveyed for the poll which was conducted online and does not have a measurable margin of error.

Canadian residents were asked to express their level of agreement with multiple statements about what stance the Canadian government takes on the Iran war.

Results show that 67 per cent of Canadians stated Ottawa should remain neutral and not support either side. A quarter of respondents believe Canada should support the U.S. and Israel.

Another 13 per cent said Canada should support Iran, while an additional 13 per cent believe Canada should attempt to support both sides of the conflict.

According to the poll, the belief that Canada should support the U.S. and Israel in their attacks on Iran was a lot higher with men than women – 33 per cent of men compared to 18 per cent of women.

At 77 per cent, Liberal and Bloc Québécois voters were more likely to say Canada should remain neutral compared to 53 per cent of Conservative voters.

Canada supporting the U.S. and Israel in their attacks on Iran was endorsed by 45 per cent of Conservative voters and only 18 per cent of Liberal voters.

Another question put towards respondents was if they support or oppose the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran based on what they have read or heard about the ongoing conflict.

Data from the poll suggests 58 per cent of Canadians oppose the war, while 25 per cent support it.

Canadians surveyed were also asked if they were concerned about the Iran conflict threatening Canada – to which 70 per cent responded they were concerned about a potential increased risk of a terrorist attack in Canada.

Sixty-nine indicated they’re worried about the Canadian military being pulled into the conflict.

And with prices on the rise, 91 per cent of respondents said they’re worried about gas and grocery prices increasing. Another 82 per cent expressed they’re concerned about threats of this conflict triggering a global economic recession leading to job losses in Canada.

Also asked in the survey was the question of support for Canadian troops being deployed on the ground in the region.

Close to 60 per cent support sending troops to defend a NATO country attacked by Iran. Another 54 per cent support sending troops to protect oil assets to ensure global economic stability.

And support for deployment to back efforts by a coalition of countries to change the regime in Iran was almost 40 per cent.

What do Americans think?

Between March 13 and March 16, 1,006 Americans were surveyed and asked the same question on if they oppose the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran – 44 per cent of American respondents said they are against the campaign, and 38 per cent were in support.

Looking at Republican voters, more than three in four support the airstrikes on Iran, compared to 15 per cent of Democrat voters.
