Eight days after a 10-year-old girl was killed in a horrific, multi-vehicle car crash in Binbrook, the mother of the child, who was also injured, has died.

A family member confirmed the tragic loss to CHCH News on Tuesday.

A Go-Fund-Me page that was started to support the family left a posted message, indicating she died in hospital from her injuries on Monday.

“After fighting for 8 long days, Julia has lost her battle,” the message says.

Hamilton police didn’t name the victims of the crash but the Go-Fund-Me page identified the victims as Julia and 10-year-old Grace.

A statement on the GoFundMe page says that “some of the funds will now be directed to funeral expenses for both Julia and Grace.”

Over $27,000 of the $30,000 goal had been raised as of the morning of July 15.

A few local posts on Facebook have sent out condolences to a Julia Smith over the past 24 hours.

On July 6th, Hamilton police said a GMC Sierra pickup truck was speeding on Trinity Church Road at around 9:30 p.m. when it crossed the centre line to pass another truck and slammed head-on into a Honda Civic carrying four people.

An SUV then rear-ended the Civic, sending it into the ditch.

A number of other people in the vehicles suffered injuries as well.

On Tuesday, Hamilton police expressed their extended condolences and issued a reminder about safety on the road.

“You know, in the summer time we see a little bit of a spike in collisions. We’re asking people to slow down, pay attention, drive according to the weather and please be mindful of others around you,” says Const. Trevor McKenna from the Hamilton Police Service.

“The yellow lines on the road, they mean something. We have to follow the rules, stay on your side and be mindful.”

Hamilton police have yet to announce any charges tied to the crash.

Hamilton police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate and is seeking additional witnesses. Anyone near the scene who did not provide a statement or who may have dash cam footage is urged to call 905-546-4753.
