Hamilton City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to approve amendments to the city’s procurement by-law.
The amendment will prioritize buying local and Canadian goods, and give Canadian companies preference for any contracts.
Hamilton is not the first city to formally shift away from purchasing American products.
Several municipalities are following suit in the wake of tariffs from the United States, as well as Doug Ford’s move to ban the Ontario government from procuring U.S. companies.
