U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a one-month exemption from tariffs for the Big Three automakers – Ford, Stellantis and General Motors.

The changes come only one day after Trump’s tariffs came into effect, prompting a strong retaliatory response from the Canadian government.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a press briefing that the automakers asked for the exemption when they spoke with Trump on Wednesday.

Leavitt also mentioned that Trump remains displeased with Canada’s efforts to prevent fentanyl from crossing the border, reiterating previous statements made by the president.

Trump posted on Truth Social minutes before the press briefing, saying “nothing has convinced me that [fentanyl trafficking] has stopped.”

The President said that he spoke to Trudeau earlier in the day, and the phone call “ended in a ‘somewhat’ friendly manner.”

This is a developing story. More to come.
