Citizen hits fleeing shoplifter with vehicle, both men charged: Brantford police

Brantford police say two men are facing charges after a citizen attempted to stop a shoplifter by hitting him with his car.

Police say it happened Saturday afternoon at a grocery store on Colborne St. East.

Officers were called to the store for reports of a theft in progress.

A loss prevention officer told police that a man allegedly stole approximately $100 worth of packaged meat and then fled the store on foot.

Police learned a citizen – who had witnessed the situation – attempted to step in and struck the shoplifter with his motor vehicle to stop him from fleeing.

Officers arrived on scene and the man was treated for minor injuries.

A 33-year-old Brantford man was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000.

A 25-year-old Brantford man was also charged with dangerous operation and assault with a weapon.
