The Hamilton Fire Department says a home in the city’s east end has been “taken down” due to risk to a neighbouring house after an early Sunday morning blaze.
Crews responded to 351 Strathearne Ave., near Barton Street East, for reports of a fire just before 5 a.m.
Upon arrival, Deputy Fire Chief Trevor Haalstra says flames were seen coming through the roof with heavy fire conditions.
He says a person that had been occupying the home was found in the backyard.
The individual was assessed and taken to hospital by local paramedics. No other injuries were reported.
The department says the fire was brought under control but the house sustained “significant structural damage and partial collapse.” Fire crews also worked to protect the house next door.
“The building department was notified to evaluate the remaining standing structure for integrity,” Haalstra says.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Damages are estimated at $650,000.
