Captain rescued after tug overturned

St Lawrence Seaway management say they can’t recall the last time something like this happened.

Around one this morning, the captain of a tugboat had to be rescued, after his boat tipped over in the Welland Canal. The tugboat was part of a team of boats that was pushing an upbound barge into a lock when it capsized.

The captain, the only occupant on the boat, was pulled from the water by his counterpart in the second boat. Although he wasn’t injured, he was taken to hospital for observation.

The west lane of the flight locks remains closed until the salvage operation is complete; otherwise the canal is open to Seaway traffic.
