Georgetown woman abandons swim

A Georgetown woman trying to become the oldest person to swim across Lake Ontario has had to abandon her swim.

60 year old Colleen Shields was just 10 kilometres from the beach at Toronto’s Marilyn Bell Park, when she was pulled out of the water around 8 Wednesday night, because of exhaustion and strong winds.

She started her swim early Wednesday at Niagara-on-the-Lake, and was hoping to complete the crossing in 18 to 20 hours.

She had to cancel two attempts earlier this year, because of bad weather.
