Horwath pushing hard in Niagara region

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath spent the day campaigning in the Niagara region. She swept through three of the four peninsula ridings. Months after the by-election victory, Horwath is finding out that holding on to Niagara Falls is shaping up to be an uphill battle.

First stop for Andrea Horwath was the Giant FM morning show in Welland. Welland has sent an NDP MPP to Queen’s Park for more than 38 years. The party’s message resonates well in this riding.

Horwath: “We’ve seen people losing jobs. We’ve seen life become less affordable. We’ve seen health care become less available.”

Ask people on the streets of the Niagara Falls riding what the issues are and they’ll tell you.

“Jobs and the economy.”

“The issues really are jobs. I have a son and he’s graduated from college. And he’s looking elsewhere because there’s nothing here for him.”

Even though Wayne Gates won the Niagara Falls riding just three months ago, it’s not a given the NDP will win again. The Laurier Institute for Public Policy is saying the Niagara Falls riding is now leaning P.C.

Horwath visited the Italian ice cream shop on Victoria Avenue and later did a tour of the new arena still under construction in St. Catharines. A week before voting day Andrea Horwath is filling her schedule with campaign stops.

Horwath: “I would say to Ontario if you’re sick and tired of Liberal corruption and you can’t stomach Mister Hudak then your choice is to vote NDP on June 12th.”

Andrea Horwath has been to the Niagara Falls riding twice since the campaign began. Today she was here to bolster the Wayne Gates campaign.
