12 young Hamilton entrepreneurs have just finished a 16 week course that taught them everything they need to know about starting a business. They put that knowledge on the line today in a “Dragon’s Den” style competition, where the best ideas walk away with up to $3000 in funding.

The event is called ‘Power of the pitch’ and each of these entrepreneurs are pitching their business idea in front of a panel of 8 judges.

“My business is baked goods. It’s something I really enjoy doing. I’ve been doing it on and off for the last 10 years. Cupcakes are my specialty.” said Lucia Guerrero.

Guerrero started Lulu’s, a cupcake and baked treats company. She’s been making cupcakes professionally for the last 3 years, and has recently partnered with a local caterer. She currently works a 9-5 job, but is hoping Lulu’s takes off. She says her pitch, was as sweet as her cupcakes.

Jayevan Foster has already won a Vanier Cup with Queen’s University, but he’s hoping to parlay his sports background into a lucrative career as an agent.

“I’m going to a lot of OUA games. I’m down at McMaster sitting in the stands with my binoculars trying to find the next football star.”

Foster felt the heat during his pitch. He’s hoping he didn’t fumble the opportunity.

10 of these entrepreneurs could be given as much as $3000 to invest in their new business. They’ve all completed a 16 week course, organized by Mohawk College, The Good Shepherd centre, and Skills for Change. The winners will announced November 19th.
