(Update)

Traffic chaos in parts of Halton today. Two separate crashes on rural roads sent eight people to hospital. This as a tractor trailer fire shut down the west bound lanes of the 401 in Milton near Guelph Line.

Traffic is moving well now on Highway 25 near the 401 but earlier today it was crawling as drivers were being rerouted because of the tractor trailer fire.

This truck carrying cheese had to pull over on the right shoulder of the 401 today after catching fire.

Dash cam footage caught video of the blaze. 400 litres of diesel fuel leaked from the tractor trailer. Fire crews and ambulance were on scene. There were no reports of injuries but the fire shut down all west bound lanes of the 401 in Milton for much of the day…

North of the 401 on Highway 25 near Side Road 22, a 64-year old Acton man was stopped in the westbound lanes waiting to turn into his driveway when police say he was rear ended by an SUV, sending him into oncoming traffic where he collided head-on with a Cadillac.

Joe Coady: “I couldn’t believe it. I got weak myself.”

Joe Coady heard the crash and came running to the scene: “Horrible, the guy in the car was laying on the middle of the road.”

Police say the man was air lifted to Sunnybrook Hospital with life threatening head injuries. The drivers of the other two cars were also taken to hospital but are expected to survive.

Residents living here say motorists often drive well above the 80 km per hour speed limit.

Leslie Young: “This is a very bad road. I have a 7-year old and I won’t let him ride his bike outside.”

Then around 11 am — another crash. This time on Derry Road near Fifth Line. Police say a 20-year old Milton man lost control of his dark Toyota after swerving to avoid a stopped car. He drove into oncoming traffic and crashed into a minivan. The 20-year old suffered a serious head injury.

Det. Const. Kevin Rye, Halton Police: “He was the most seriously injured. He had to be airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital. His condition is described as critical. We don’t belive there are any other serious injuries.”

Police say a passenger in the Toyota and three passengers in the minivan were also taken to hospital. They’re all expected to be ok. All three of these crashes have since been cleared and the roads are now reopened.
