Police close magic mushroom business in Hamilton’s east end

First Published:

Hamilton police have raided and closed an illegal magic mushroom business in the city’s east end.

John Francis opened the business, called The Mushroom Cabinet, on Monday.

In a press release, Francis said he believes magic mushrooms “can make a big difference in a major health issue getting increasingly worse in our communities.”

Police began an investigation into the opening of the dispensary on Tuesday. Three hours into its second day of business, Hamilton police had a warrant to shut the dispensary down.

Officers arrested two individuals onsite in relation to the execution of the warrant.

Police remind the public that psilocybin remains a schedule III drug and a restricted substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act (CDSA).

The investigation continues with drug investigators assisting the Asset Forfeiture Unit. If the owner of the property is found to be connected with the business, the property could be subject to forfeiture and any assets seized.

Anyone with information that could assist police with the investigation are encouraged to contact Det. Sgt. Greg Slack at 905-546-3810.
