Parliamentary investigations into WE Charity scandal begin

First Published:

The first of multiple parliamentary investigations into the WE Charity scandal begins Thursday.

The House of Commons finance committee is probing how WE got a sole-sourced contract to administer the $900 million Canada Student Service Grant.

The program is aimed at students who haven’t been able to find work this summer.

WE gave up the contract two weeks ago, amid controversy over the Trudeau family’s connection to the organization.

At first, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau maintained that WE was selected to administer the funds by the public service.

He has since apologized saying he should have recused himself from the decision to award the contract.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau has also apologized for not recusing himself from the decision.

The Morneau family also has ties to the charity.

Youth Minister Bardish Chagger and some senior public servants will be answering questions from the committee Thursday.
