Ski hills have had to close down or cut back operations in the face of unusually mild weather.
At Conservation Halton’s Glen Eden ski resort it’s painfully obvious why they had to close down their hills on Monday. The same lack of snow has hit other ski hills in the region, like Chicopee in Kitchener.
Some of Blue Mountain’s ski slopes look pretty rough causing them to shut down some runs. Same with Horsehoe Valley.
This is happening in a season when ski resorts were hoping to bounce back from years of COVID-19 closures.
Normally on Jan. 2, there would be a thousand or more skiers at Glen Eden, and hundreds of workers.
Estimates put the Ontario ski industry’s losses from COVID disruptions at $120M.
Chris Bloore of the Ontario Tourism Association says, “the ski industry is an integral part of Ontario’s tourism industry and our provincial economy.” He says, “this isn’t the start to the season that we had hoped for. every day operators lose of the current season due to weather is a significant blow.”
The ski hills are hoping this weather doesn’t last too long and starts to turn around later in the week then they could start making snow.
