HAPPENING NOW:
See The Keys as we head down to Florida to visit Key West

Emily Vukovic finished her tour of The Florida Keys in Key West.
Key West is Florida’s southern most subtropical paradise, and is located closer to Cuba than it is to Miami. The balmy climate and easy going lifestyle attracts many visitors there, including famous people like Ernest Hemmingway, Judy Blume and Robert Frost.
She kicked off her stay with the Sunset Celebration, which is a nightly street carnival in Mallory Square overlooking Key West Harbour. The celebration features arts & crafts exhibitors, street performers, food carts and more and crowds flock to the celebration each evening to observe and applaud the sun setting over the water.
Key West also has the largest historic district of wood-framed buildings in the nation, and history lovers can discover the islands Bahamian and Cuban heritage in restaurants, cigar shops and museums.
Speaking of history, Emily learned all about the Conch Republic from Julie McEnore, the Secretary of the Navy for the Conch Republic. The Conch Republic started when there was a succession of the city of Key West from the United States in 1982, and now every year in April that locals and tourists get to take part in the re-enactment and act like they are children again.
Emily’s trip also took her back in time when she stepped into the Harry S. Truman Little White House. The house was built in 1890, and became known as the Truman Little White House, because during his presidency, Truman made 11 visits to Key West, totaling 175 days running the country from the house. All the décor in the house dates back to 1949 and it is one of the biggest tourist destinations in Key West.
Her last and final stop is a staple of Key West- Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shop, which is famous for their pie. Celebrating their 30th anniversary, Kermit is still making his grandma’s recipe that he was taught when he was a kid. From the traditional key lime pie to a chocolate dipped key lime pie, this topped the list out of all the key lime pies Emily’s tried on her whole trip.
