Canada defeats Finland 5-2 in opening of world junior

Canada opened up the world juniors with a 5-2 win over Finland early Tuesday.
With a little over three and a half minutes left on the clock, 19-year-old Nate Danielson fought for the first goal after Maveric Lamoureaux put a shot on the net and managed to deflect the puck past the Finnish goaltender for the Canadian’s first goal.
Entering the second period, both teams had equal opportunity to capitalize on their respective power plays but failed to do so.
The second goal of the match was by Owen Allard who was in front of the net, where he managed to bang one in off the pipe following a pass from Danielson with eight minutes to go.
The Finnish team managed to score one of their own off a powerplay immediately following as a result of a 2 minute penalty on Matthew Savoie who was called for tripping, bringing it to 2-1 for the Canadians.
The Canadians went on to score three more goals to Finland’s one in the third. Macklin Celebrini reclaimed Canada’s two-goal lead early in the period, while Matthew Poitras and Lamoureaux each had one of their own on an empty net.
Overall, the Canadians had 31 shots against Finland’s 26.
Additionally, Canada had six penalties: four for tripping, one for hooking and another for boarding.
Canada goes on to face Latvia on Wednesday.
