Million Dollar Arm is a comedic sports drama directed by Craig Gillespie. The based-on-a-true-story film follows JB Bernstein (Jon Hamm), a struggling sports agent finding himself being bypassed by his competition and on the edge of closing down his business. Finding inspiration while watching cricket, JB sets off to Mumbai and stages a competition in an attempt to find the next baseball pitching sensation. The movie co-stars Aasif Mandvi (as Aash), Alan Arkin (as Ray), Suraj Sharma (as Rinku), Madhur Mittal (as Dinesh), and Bill Paxton (as Tom House). In classic Disney fashion, what starts out simply as a monetary journey for JB turns into a reflection of many important life lessons and allows JB to discover something that he was not looking for.
Being no stranger to comedy and offbeat dramas, Craig Gillespie states that it was the script, written by Tom McCarthy, that hooked him to Million Dollar Arm. “I love when you can mix that blend of humor and drama,” Gillespie says. “It was so clear on the page that the film just popped out. It’s an amazing story. I find myself doing this tricky tonal balance [anyway]. Even with the ‘Fright Night’ remake. I love when you can do that dance and also where you’re letting an audience make a choice. I’m not telling them how to respond to a scene, whether they’re laughing or tearing up. It’s a personal experience.” The inspiring film has been met with generally favourable reviews and hopes to bring some spark back into the genre of sports movies.
Million Dollar Arm is rated PG.
