An early morning fire at the site of a vacant inn in Niagara Falls is under investigation after two people were found living inside the building that had been previously deemed uninhabitable.
Emergency crews were called to the former The America’s Hospitality Inn on Lundy’s Lane around 7:10 a.m.
Firefighters arrived to find a room on the bottom floor fully engulfed in flames.
Crews searched the building and located a man and woman curled up in a bed in a room directly above the fire. The duo appeared to be living illegally in the building and was unaware of the fire.
They were safely brought out and treated for smoke inhalation.
Niagara Falls Fire Chief Jo Zambito said the structure had previously been deemed uninhabitable by a fire marshal.
Several doors at the former inn have been boarded up. Mattresses, couches, garbage and large pieces of furniture can be seen strewn across the property.
Fire officials believe a candle or flame that was possibly being used for heat caused the fire.
