Westmount students stage walkout over schools’ inaction against homophobia
Hundreds of students at Westmount high school walked out of class Wednesday protesting what they’re calling a lack of action against homophobia at their school.
Several football players at the school were suspended after an alleged homophobic group chat was shared amongst the school body.
According to the organizer of the walkout, the football players were suspended for three days.
The students say they don’t feel safe at the school, and that the administration is to blame.
CHCH News reached out to the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board for a comment and we received this statement:
“Staff agree with the students that everyone has the right to feel safe, accepted, and included. We believe the students when they share their experience. They also have a right to advocate for a more inclusive culture.”
Organizers of the protest are meeting with school board officials Thursday.
