Despite anti-lockdown protests and code of conduct violations, West Lincoln’s Dave Bylsma is seeking re-election.

The mayoral incumbent says past controversies were him advocating for small business’s along with mental health support. While in the mayor’s seat Bylsma faced repercussions following participation in a protest against provincial stay-at-home orders, an online message asking a constituent about their menstrual cycle after their vaccination, and radio comments about the town not flying the pride flag.

Today, Bylsma says he’s looking ahead and aims to manage a community on the uprise, “we’re expecting to grow significantly, and I want to see that done in a paced way. I don’t want to lose that too quickly, not lose our country charm.

Candidate Cheryl Ganann says she wants to bring more inclusivity to the rural township. The 6-year town councillor says she wants to change negative perceptions and prepare for new residents along with approvals for more housing, roads, and other infrastructure.

One of the hot topics in West Lincoln is expansion, candidates are looking forward to addressing it. They say by 2051 West Lincoln, particularly Smithville, will double in size.

Newcomer Greg Stephens is also running for mayor. Stephens lives in rural Caistor Centre. Stephens has never sat in a council seat but the utility contractor says his work experience with municipalities will translate.
