Two formerly homeless men are giving thanks to Wesley Urban Ministries and are doing what they can to pay it forward.

For Murray and Rodger, life on the street was not easy. Murray moved from Winnipeg to Hamilton 15 years ago and struggled finding a job and a place to live. Rodger was homeless for 5 years, addicted to drugs and alcohol but found help. “When I came here 11 years ago I got a place through Wesley within a month and a half of being here and I’ve been housed with them ever since.”

It’s been years since Rodger and Murray first stepped foot inside Wesley Urban Ministries but they say they don’t know where they would be without the people who have helped them.

“At Wesley we’re in it for the long haul and we don’t give up on people.” Dean Waterfield is the director of housing and homelessness. He says 91% of the people who are housed by Wesley remain off the street and out of shelters.

Part of Wesley’s philosophy is to give and encourage others to give back. Rodger has been volunteering regularly. Murray has a full time job and runs a free monthly program called “fun Fridays” showing drive-in style movies with food and drinks for people in community housing and the homeless.
