Welland man arrested in connection with sexual assault of a child, say police

Niagara police say they’ve arrested 25-year-old Daniel Senecal of Welland in connection with a sexual assault of a child under the age of five, who remains in hospital.
On Sunday, Aug. 31, police and paramedics were called to a home near Crowland Avenue and York Street in Welland for a medical assistance call involving a young child.
When emergency crews arrived, officers discovered the front door of the home showed signs of being forced open and the child was suffering from serious injuries.
They were transported to an out-of-region hospital for advanced medical care.
After speaking with the parents, police say it became apparent that a stranger broke into their home sometime between 10 p.m. and 8:59 a.m. While inside the home, the stranger is believed to have sexually assaulted their child.
Uniform officers secured the scene and canvassed the neighbourhood shortly thereafter. Investigators say a witness came forward with surveillance video, and a suspect was identified.
Daniel Senecal, 25, of Welland was arrested and charged with the following:
- Aggravated Sexual Assault on a Person Under 16 Years
- Assault
- Assault / Choking
- Break Enter and Commit – Dwelling House
- Sexual Interference With a Person Under 16 Years of Age
Detectives with the Child Abuse Unit have taken over this investigation and are being supported by the Sexual Assault Unit and Forensic Services Unit.
Frank Campion, the mayor for the City of Welland, sent condolences and concern for the family of the child in a message Wednesday.
“To the family, please know that your privacy, safety, and healing are of the utmost importance, and you have the unwavering support of your community,” said Campion.
“This act of violence has shaken our city to its core. It goes against everything Welland stands for, and we will not tolerate it. Together, as neighbours, parents, and friends, we must remain united and do all we can to protect our children and each other.”
MPP Jeff Burch said the assault has “left [the] entire community shocked and heartbroken.”
“Every child deserves to grow up in a safe home, a safe neighbourhood, and a society that protects their innocence,” he said in a statement.
