The turtles in a half shell are back this summer in a Michael Bay directed reboot. It looks like Bay is trying to bring a bit of grit to the classic cartoon, the way he did with the Transformers franchise. The turtles are voiced by relatively unknown actors  Pete Ploszek, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, and Alan Ritchson, with Megan Fox taking on the role of TV reporter April O’Neil and William Fichtner playing the villainous Shredder. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens on August 8.

Hercules

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has found his next tough guy role in Hercules. While the trailer highlights many of the hero’s famous twelve labours, the story is said to take place after his successful completion of them. The film is the second one based on the Greek hero to be released this year after The Legend of Hercules flopped at the box office in January. Aside from his turn in the Fast and the Furious films, Johnson hasn’t seen much success at the box office. He does work a lot however, enough to make him the highest grossing actor of 2013. Hercules opens July 25.

Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow is an upcoming sci-fi film based on the Japanese novel All You Need is Kill. Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt star as special forces troops thrown into a suicidal battle against alien attackers. But when Cruise’s character is killed, he gets stuck in a time loop, forced to live out the same battle over and over but getting stronger with each new attempt. Think of it as a brutal Groundhog Day. Edge of Tomorrow opens on June 6.

Jupiter Ascending

The next epic sci-fi outing from The Wachowskis hits theatres this summer. Jupiter Ascending stars Mila Kunis as Jupiter, a janitor who possesses the same genetic makeup as the reigning “Queen of the Universe”. A half-man, half-wolf mercenary, played by Channing Tatum, is sent to Earth to eliminate her, but ends up helping her claim her rightful throne. Sean Bean and Eddie Redmayne also star in the visually stunning picture, which you can catch in theatres July 18.

Into the Storm

In 1996, a little film called Twister was unleashed on audiences, and while the critical reception wasn’t all that positive, the pop culture impact was huge. It became the second highest grossing film of the year, earned Oscar nominations for its sound and visual effects work, and really revived the disaster film genre. Almost 20 years later, Into the Storm looks to tap back into that market, and while it’s hard to tell from the trailer, the movie is being described as a “found-footage” disaster film. Into the Storm stars Richard Armitage, Jeremy Sumpter, and Sarah Wayne Callies and opens August 8.

The Purge: Anarchy

The Purge was a sleeper success at the box office when it was released last year, prompting Universal to develop this sequel. Starring Frank Grillo, Zach Gilford, Michael K. Williams, and Kelie Sanchez, the film follows a group of people trapped outside during the yearly purge, working together to survive the night. Last year’s release proved that horror films can be successful during the blockbuster filled summer months, so long as there’s some action in it too. The Purge: Anarchy hits theatres July 18.

Night Moves

No, Night Moves is not a Bob Seger biopic. The film is a drama starring Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning, and Peter Sarsgaard as environmental activists planning to blow up a hydroelectric dam. The trailer really sets the tone for the film, which was shown at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival last year. No date has been set for a theatrical release.
