Watermain installation to cause lane closures in Hamilton’s east end for 3 months

The City of Hamilton will be reducing lanes along Queenston Road at Rosewood Road starting Monday for crews to install a new watermain.

City staff say the installation starting Sept. 15, is part of ongoing work for the Light Rail Transit (LRT) project to provide a future corridor for utilities when LRT civil works begin.

At the intersection, two lanes of traffic will be maintained throughout with minor traffic stoppages — one lane going east and one going west — with construction in the area to work until mid-November.

Local access to the area will be maintained, but city staff say the road closures may cause delays.

Construction crews will be set up on the north lane — the westbound curb-lane at Delena Avenue — and don’t expect to impact Hamilton Street Railway services or traffic.

Starting next week, crews will begin removing an existing watermain at the intersection, which will take one to two weeks.

Enbridge Gas will take over the construction site at the start of October to relocate existing gas mains to accommodate the new watermain from Rosewood Road, which is expected to take six to eight weeks.

Following that, the new watermain will be installed sometime in late October or early November.

City of Hamilton staff are encouraging residents to plan ahead and to use alternate routes during the construction, and to expect delays and increased traffic.
