Ontario Premier Doug Ford spoke at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington Monday morning to discuss the development of a new mental health unit.

The premier was joined by Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones, and Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Michael Tibollo.

Ford says the government investment into the new mental unit is part of the $50 billion worth of investments in over 50 hospital projects province-wide.

The Ontario government says the new unit will include a new adult outpatient space, improved adult psychiatric intensive care, enhanced child and youth programming and programs that will include more personnel to support complex patient care needs.

The new mental health unit will be named after Michael and Laura Paletta, whom donated $5M earlier in January towards the redevelopment and expansion of the unit.

There was no price tag announced for the proposed new mental health unit yet, pending the resolution of conversations with hospital staff.

The new unit development is expected to begin it’s early work April 2025.
